Humanitarian Groups Call for Access
The humanitarian community is pleading for unimpeded access to deliver life-saving assistance to affected communities. Nasir County, one of the worst-hit areas, has become nearly inaccessible due to heavy fighting and is also a known hotspot for anti-government militias.
Mary-Ellen McGroarty, WFP’s representative in South Sudan, emphasized the urgency:
“Conflict not only destroys homes and livelihoods; it tears communities apart, cuts off access to markets and sends food prices soaring. Long-term peace is essential, but for now, it is paramount that our teams are able to access families caught in the Upper Nile conflict and safely distribute food to them, to pull them through and prevent famine.”
A Global Call for Support

The IPC includes experts from over 20 organizations, including UN agencies, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), the World Bank, and the European Union. These groups collaborate to monitor and assess hunger levels globally, and their latest joint report on South Sudan is one of the most serious in recent years.
With South Sudan’s rainy season fast approaching, many roads will soon become impassable, further threatening the delivery of aid. UN agencies are urging donors and the international community to act swiftly to support relief efforts.
