Legendary Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart Dies at 90

Renowned American televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who once led one of the largest global Christian ministries before falling from grace amid scandal, has died at the age of 90. His family confirmed that the preacher passed away after suffering a heart attack at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on June 15. He had been in intensive care prior to his death.

A Life Devoted to Preaching and Worship

Swaggart’s church released a heartfelt statement following his death, praising his lifetime dedication to spreading the gospel. “For over seven decades, Brother Swaggart poured out his life preaching the gospel, singing songs of the faith, and pointing millions to the saving power of Jesus Christ and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit,” it said. Throughout his ministry, Swaggart emphasized passionate preaching, emotional worship, and a deep belief in the Pentecostal tradition.

Rise to Global Fame in the 1980s

Swaggart began his ministry in the 1960s and became a pioneer in televangelism. His impassioned sermons broadcast from Louisiana reached audiences across more than 100 countries. By the 1980s, his ministry was pulling in $140 million annually, funded through viewer donations, sales of gospel music albums, and religious merchandise, including replicas of biblical artifacts.

A Ministry Built on Fire and Faith

Known for his fiery sermons, Swaggart once described himself as an “old-fashioned, Holy Ghost-filled, shouting, weeping, soul-winning, Gospel-preaching preacher.” His Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, which seated 7,000 people, regularly hosted dramatic services where worshippers often wept, spoke in tongues, and responded emotionally to his preaching. He frequently framed life as a battle between good and evil and warned about the perils of moral temptation.

The 1988 Scandal That Changed Everything

At the height of his success, Swaggart’s world came crashing down in 1988 when he was photographed in New Orleans with a sex worker. The image sent shockwaves through religious and secular circles alike. In a tearful televised confession, Swaggart pleaded for forgiveness from his followers. “To the hundreds of millions that I have stood before… I have sinned against you, and I beg you to forgive me. I have sinned against you, my Lord,” he declared, weeping.

A Fall Marked by Hypocrisy and Controversy

Swaggart’s fall was further complicated by his previously harsh criticisms of other fallen religious leaders. He had publicly denounced preachers entangled in similar scandals and had made inflammatory comments about Catholicism and Judaism, calling them illegitimate faiths. His hypocrisy came into sharper focus in 1991, when he was caught again with a sex worker in California. This time, his response was dismissive: “The Lord told me it’s flat none of your business.”

Consequences and Collapse of a Media Empire

Following the scandals, Swaggart was expelled from the Assemblies of God, a major Pentecostal organization. Religious networks pulled his programs, and his ministry — once a dominant force and employer in Louisiana — began to shrink. Legal troubles over tax issues also weakened his operation. The once-booming televangelist empire dwindled significantly in both influence and revenue.

Continued Preaching Until the End

Despite his scandals and diminished following, Swaggart never stopped preaching. He continued broadcasting sermons through his own ministry and network. Though his audience was no longer in the millions, he retained a loyal base of supporters who remained devoted to his message and legacy.

Legacy of a Complicated Religious Icon

Jimmy Swaggart leaves behind a complex legacy — one marked by incredible spiritual influence and crushing public scandal. He was a man whose voice once reached the corners of the globe, only to have his reputation marred by personal failings. Yet even after scandal, Swaggart persisted, preaching until the end of his life. For many, he remains a symbol of both human imperfection and enduring faith.
