Fela Kuti (1938-1997) was a Nigerian musician, bandleader, and activist who pioneered the Afrobeat genre. Born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, he was raised in a prominent family. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a renowned women’s rights activist, and his father, Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was an Anglican minister and educator.

Kuti’s early life was marked by exposure to music and activism. He studied music in London and formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, blending jazz, highlife, and traditional Yoruba music. After returning to Nigeria, he renamed his band Africa ’70 and developed the Afrobeat style, characterized by complex rhythms, horn sections, and socially conscious lyrics.

Throughout the 1970s, Kuti’s music addressed issues like corruption, poverty, and government brutality. His lyrics often criticized Nigeria’s military juntas, and he became a target of government repression. In 1977, soldiers raided his commune, the Kalakuta Republic, killing his mother and leaving him severely beaten.

Kuti continued to produce music and tour, even after being jailed in 1984 for alleged currency smuggling. Amnesty International recognized him as a prisoner of conscience, and international pressure led to his release after 20 months.

Kuti’s legacy extends beyond his music. He was a vocal advocate for human rights, Pan-Africanism, and social justice. His Afrobeat style has influenced generations of musicians worldwide. After his death on August 2, 1997, his sons Femi and Seun Kuti continued his musical legacy.
