In December, gold was discovered in the region, sparking a modern-day gold rush. Thousands of people from all over the country rushed to Lomera, seeking quick riches and a better future. But the unregulated nature of the mining operations meant safety was often sacrificed in the scramble for gold.
A Deadly Collapse
Over the weekend, several artisanal mine shafts caved in, trapping an unknown number of miners underground. While rescue efforts continue, the number of confirmed deaths remains unclear. Local reports suggest that many families are still searching for loved ones believed to be underground.
The village has been overwhelmed by grief and uncertainty, with rescue teams struggling to access the unstable shafts. Many of the mine tunnels were dug by hand without any formal engineering or reinforcement, making collapse highly likely.
The Shadow of Conflict
Lomera’s gold is not just attracting fortune-seekers it is also fueling tension in a region already plagued by violence. The village falls within an area currently under the control of the M23 rebel group, which took over parts of the mineral-rich eastern DRC earlier this year.
The group’s control has added a dangerous layer to the situation. With limited oversight from the national government, illegal mining has flourished. In many cases, rebels benefit from the sale of minerals, including gold, further complicating rescue and recovery operations.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Local authorities and residents are doing what they can to save those still trapped. However, without heavy machinery and trained personnel, progress is painfully slow. Villagers are using rudimentary tools, often risking their own lives to dig through the rubble.
“We can hear voices from underground, but we don’t have the proper tools to reach them,” said one rescuer. “We need help before it’s too late.”
Humanitarian agencies have begun to arrive in the area, bringing with them food, water, and emergency supplies. But the terrain, coupled with the rebel presence, is making access difficult.
The Cost of Gold
The tragedy in Lomera highlights the harsh reality of artisanal mining in the DRC. Although the country is one of the most resource-rich in the world, its mineral wealth has too often led to conflict, exploitation, and loss.
In South Kivu, many miners operate without licenses or protection. Children are often seen working alongside adults, and safety precautions are nearly nonexistent. Fatal accidents are tragically common, but they rarely draw international attention.
A Community in Mourning
As search efforts continue, families wait anxiously, clinging to hope. Small crowds gather near the collapsed shafts, praying, crying, and calling out the names of those still missing.
“We came here hoping for gold, but now all we want is to find our people,” said a mother whose two sons are missing.
