Ghanaian forward Joseph Amankwaah Opoku has signed a contract extension with Belgian Pro League club Zulte Waregem, keeping him at the club until 2027, with an option for two more years.

Breakout campaign earns recognition

The 19-year-old earned the extension after a strong debut season in the Challenger Pro League, where he made 26 appearances, scored three goals, and provided seven assists. His performances played a key role in Zulte Waregem’s successful promotion back to Belgium’s top flight.

“Joseph Opoku brought a lot of excitement to Essevee fans last season,” the club said in an official statement. “The Ghanaian is now being rewarded for his excellent campaign with a new contract.”

National team success with the U-20s

Opoku’s form also earned him a spot in Ghana’s squad for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. He notably scored the winning goal in the final group stage match, helping the Black Satellites advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Grateful for club support and development

Speaking on his journey, Opoku shared: “Over the past twelve months, Essevee has given me so much. A year ago, I couldn’t even have dreamed of this scenario. Today, I am a professional footballer. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved as a team, but I believe this is just the beginning.”

Top-flight debut marks a new chapter

Opoku made his debut in Belgium’s top division on Sunday, completing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Mechelen. His presence on the pitch reflects the club’s faith in his abilities at the highest level.

From Ghana to Belgium’s elite

Opoku joined Zulte Waregem in August 2025 from Ghanaian lower-tier side Great Corinthians. His journey from a local team in Ghana to making waves in European football is a testament to his talent and determination.
