Thomas Partey Nears Move to Villarreal After Arsenal Exit
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is on the verge of completing a move to Spanish side Villarreal, with a two-year contract reportedly agreed upon pending final confirmation.
Partey Set for Spanish Return After Arsenal Departure
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international became a free agent after his contract with Arsenal expired in June. He has since undergone a medical with Villarreal and is expected to commit to the club until 2027. A key factor influencing his decision is Villarreal’s presence in the UEFA Champions League, which offers him continued exposure to top-tier European football.
Rape Charges Loom Ahead of Court Appearance

Partey is currently facing serious legal issues. On July 4, UK authorities charged him with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He has denied all allegations. These charges stem from an investigation that began in February 2022. Despite the ongoing probe, Partey continued to play for Arsenal until the end of the 2024/25 season. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5.
Contract Talks With Arsenal Broke Down
According to The Athletic, Partey had entered into negotiations with Arsenal regarding a possible contract renewal. However, both parties failed to reach a mutual agreement, prompting his departure. Arsenal had reportedly considered keeping the midfielder, but terms could not be finalised.
Arsenal Career Marked by Versatility and Injury
Partey joined the North London club from Atlético Madrid in 2020 in a £45.4 million (€50m) transfer. During his time with the Gunners, he made a total of 167 appearances and scored nine goals. Though primarily deployed as a central midfielder, he occasionally featured at right-back under different managerial systems. In the 2024/25 campaign alone, he appeared in 52 matches across all competitions.
