Domingos Simoes Pereira vows to return home despite safety concerns and political tensions
Former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira has announced plans to return to Guinea-Bissau and run for the presidency. His declaration marks a bold re-entry into the country’s turbulent political scene.
Opposition Leader in Exile
Pereira, who leads the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), has been living in Lisbon since 2023. He left following President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s controversial decision to dissolve the National Assembly.
Addressing the Diaspora

Speaking to members of the Guinea-Bissau diaspora, Pereira admitted concerns about his personal safety. However, he emphasized his responsibility to continue the political struggle, portraying his candidacy as an act of duty rather than ambition.
Embalo’s Response
President Embalo has downplayed Pereira’s safety fears, stating the opposition leader can return without issue. Yet he also issued a stern warning, cautioning Pereira not to challenge the results of the upcoming November election.
A Persistent Candidate
If Pereira proceeds with his plan, it will mark his fourth bid for the presidency. His repeated attempts reflect both his determination and the deep divisions within Guinea-Bissau’s political system.
