Former president Peter Mutharika has taken an early lead in Malawi’s tightly contested presidential election, according to provisional results released over the weekend.
With tallies from a quarter of the nation’s councils, Mutharika holds 51% of the vote, compared to 39% for incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, Reuters reported on Sunday.
Election observers had predicted a two-horse race between the two men, who represent Malawi’s biggest political parties.
Malawi’s Economic Struggles Under Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera, 70, has faced criticism over Malawi’s stagnant economy during his five-year tenure.
A combination of cyclones, drought, and food insecurity has battered the nation, while inflation has remained above 20% for more than three years.
Chakwera came to office in 2020 promising to combat corruption, but critics argue his efforts have been selective and slow.
Mutharika’s Comeback Bid
At 85, Mutharika is running on a campaign promising a return to stability and growth.
During his presidency from 2014 to 2020, he was credited with lowering inflation and investing in infrastructure. However, he faced accusations of cronyism and favoritism.

His 2019 election victory was annulled by Malawi’s constitutional court after irregularities, including the use of correction fluid on results sheets. Chakwera went on to win the re-run in 2020.
Next Steps in the Electoral Process
The electoral commission has until September 24 to announce the provisional results.
It has urged candidates not to declare victory prematurely, stressing that every tally sheet is being cross-checked for accuracy.
For an outright win, a candidate must secure over 50% of valid votes. If no candidate reaches this threshold, a runoff election will be held.
