South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has renewed his country’s support for Palestinian statehood, urging global action toward a two-state solution.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to a two-state solution as the war in Gaza continues.
Speaking at a United Nations General Assembly summit on Palestinian statehood, Ramaphosa said:
“South Africa reiterates its firm commitment to the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state existing peacefully side by side with the state of Israel along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
He criticised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, saying it had “unleashed disproportionate punishment against the people of Palestine.”
Growing Support for Recognition
The summit, chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, saw several new countries formally recognise Palestine.
On Monday, France, Belgium, Monaco, Luxembourg, and Malta joined the list of nations backing Palestinian statehood.
Their decision followed announcements a day earlier from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal.
Ramaphosa called the wave of recognitions a moment of “great significance” for both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as for those who believe in freedom and self-determination.

Obstacles to Peace
The South African leader emphasised that all barriers to the two-state solution must be dismantled. This includes halting illegal Israeli settlements and removing the separation wall.
He noted that the conflict has endured for nearly as long as the United Nations has existed, underlining the urgency of action.
Israeli and US Opposition
Israel and the United States boycotted the gathering. The Israeli ambassador to the UN dismissed the event as a “circus,” reiterating Israel’s rejection of Palestinian statehood.
