According to the United States Embassy in Mali, Washington introduced the visa bond policy to “protect America’s borders and safeguard US national security.” Mali’s foreign ministry responded by stating that it would not allow such unilateral measures to go unanswered and has “established an identical visa programme” aimed at US citizens seeking entry into Mali. The bond is expected to be returned once travelers leave the country in compliance with their visa conditions.

Diplomatic Engagement Undermined

The visa bond announcement comes just months after US officials visited Mali in July to explore cooperation on counterterrorism and economic partnerships.
