Jesse Clegg and Msaki’s Entropy: The Harmony of Change and Connection

How the singer-songwriter’s journey with Msaki birthed a new sound of truth in “Entropy”

South African musician Jesse Clegg is entering a new chapter of creative exploration with Entropy, his forthcoming collaborative EP with the poetic and soulful Msaki. The project, set for release in January 2026, marks a defining moment in Clegg’s evolution one that intertwines artistry with emotional honesty, and creativity with connection. It is more than just an EP; it is a reflection of friendship, travel, and transformation, told through melodies that feel both intimate and infinite.

Jesse recalls that his collaboration with Msaki began more than three years ago when the two artists met while working on another project. What started as a professional encounter soon grew into something deeply personal and artistically meaningful. “I was such a fan of her writing, her voice, and her artistic presence in the industry,” he shared in a recent interview. From the very first day in the studio there was a creative spark between them a chemistry that went beyond music. They found themselves connecting over shared transitions in their lives, each navigating emotional changes and searching for new meaning through their art.

Those early sessions were never intended to become a project. Yet, as they wrote together, the songs began to take on a life of their own. “After we’d written two or three songs, it felt really exciting because the music didn’t sound like me or Msaki,” Jesse explained. “It sounded like something new.” That realization that two distinct voices could merge to create a third, original sound became the heart of Entropy.

The EP was written across four cities Cape Town, Los Angeles, Johannesburg and New York each song like a postcard from a different chapter of their journey. Clegg describes the experience as deeply personal, saying the tracks became “a lot like diary entries from different moments in our lives.” The songs carry the emotional weight of movement of leaving, arriving, and rediscovering oneself through the act of creation.

Among the standout tracks is the lead single Wayside Lover, which introduces listeners to the emotional landscape of Entropy. The song explores themes of love, disconnection, and emotional tension, told through layered harmonies and hauntingly beautiful lyrics. It was one of the first songs Clegg and Msaki wrote together, during a period when both were undergoing personal transformation. “It started in LA after we’d gone to Coachella, continued in Joburg, and was finished in Cape Town. It travelled with us,” Jesse recalled. That movement mirrors the song’s story two souls caught between the warmth of connection and the inevitability of change.

The single also features the renowned artist Sjava, whose verse adds a contemplative third voice to the track. According to Clegg, the collaboration with Sjava was never planned it happened naturally when he played the song for him. “He immediately connected with Wayside Lover and asked to be part of it. His verse adds this beautiful observer’s perspective on the interaction between our two voices,” Jesse said. The blend of their distinct styles Msaki’s ethereal tone, Jesse’s grounded emotion, and Sjava’s soulful presence results in something strikingly original, a sonic conversation about love and impermanence.

Produced by Greg Abrahams and Nicholas Petricca, and mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winner Damian Taylor, Entropy blends African storytelling with global influences, reflecting both the artists’ roots and their shared vision for experimentation. The sound is textured, honest, and deeply human music that doesn’t try to impress but instead chooses to express.

For Jesse Clegg, Entropy is not about expectation but exploration. “I think people will be surprised,” he said. “They might not have expected Msaki and me to make an album together, but that’s what makes it interesting. It’s a pleasant surprise.” The project feels like an artistic and spiritual meeting point where two creative forces come together not to define themselves, but to discover something new in each other.

In the end, Entropy is more than just a musical collaboration. It is a testimony to growth, friendship, and the beauty of creative vulnerability. It reminds us that music, at its core, is not about perfection but presence about the courage to be open, to feel deeply, and to evolve without fear. For Jesse Clegg and Msaki, that courage has led to a body of work that resonates with authenticity and soul, a true harmony of change and connection.
