Hannibal Gadhafi Ordered Released in Lebanon if $11 Million Bail is Paid

The son of the late Libyan leader has been held for 10 years without charge, sparking legal and diplomatic disputes
A Lebanese judge has ordered the release of Hannibal Gadhafi, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, after 10 years in prison without charge. The release is conditional upon the payment of $11 million bail, a decision that his legal team has vowed to contest.
Gadhafi, who has been detained in Lebanon since 2015, has been suffering from deteriorating health conditions. His detention without trial has drawn international attention and pressure for his release.
Judge Orders Release with Conditions
On Friday, Gadhafi was transferred to the Justice Palace in Beirut, where Judge Zaher Hamadeh questioned him before issuing the release order. In addition to the $11 million bail, the judge ruled that Gadhafi would be banned from leaving Lebanon for two months.
His defense team immediately announced plans to appeal the bail amount, describing it as โunrealistic.โ Lawyer Charbel Milad al-Khoury said Gadhafi does not have access to the funds needed to meet the condition.
Legal Battle Extends to Geneva

Gadhafiโs lawyers have filed a case against the Lebanese state in Geneva, arguing that his 10-year detention without trial violates international law. The case is expected to be heard in Switzerland next month.
Al-Khoury described the bail decision as โillogical,โ stressing that his client has already endured years in prison without formal charges.
Abduction and Arrest in Lebanon
Gadhafi has been in custody since 2015, when he was abducted by Lebanese militants in Baalbek. The militants demanded information about the 1978 disappearance of Shiite cleric Moussa al-Sadr during a visit to Libya. Lebanese authorities later took custody of him, and he has been detained in Beirut ever since.
Before his abduction, Gadhafi had been living in exile in Syria with his wife, Aline Skaf, and their children. Over the years, he has faced repeated questioning about al-Sadrโs disappearance.

Al-Sadr Disappearance: A Lingering Mystery
Al-Sadr was a prominent Shiite cleric and founder of a political and military movement that became influential during Lebanese Civil War. His disappearance has remained one of Lebanonโs most sensitive unresolved cases.
When asked about al-Sadr during Fridayโs hearing, Gadhafi replied, โI donโt knowโ and โI donโt remember,โ according to judicial officials.
A Controversial Family Legacy
Hannibal Gadhafi was born nearly three years before al-Sadr vanished. His father, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed during Libyan Civil War in 2011, ending a four-decade rule. Hannibal fled to Algeria after the fall of Tripoli, later moving to Syria, where he was granted political asylum.
Several of Gaddafiโs children held key roles in his regime. Muatassim was killed alongside his father, while Seif al-Arab and Khamis died during the uprising. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, once the presumed heir, was released from detention in Libya in 2017. Other siblings live in Oman and Turkey.
