Tour du Rwanda Hit by Tragedy as Two Spectators Killed on Opening Day
The 18th edition of the Tour du Rwanda began in Rukomo on Sunday but was overshadowed by tragedy after two spectators were killed in a road accident.
The crash occurred near Gabiro when a vehicle reportedly lost control in rainy conditions. Six other people were injured, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Despite the sombre atmosphere, Israel’s Itamar Einhorn claimed the first yellow jersey, finishing the 173km opening stage — the longest of the race — in 4 hours and 5 seconds.
The race, supported by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has grown in international recognition in recent years, positioning Rwanda as a rising hub for competitive road cycling in Africa.
Officials say the tragedy is a heavy blow to the event as the country continues to build its profile on the global cycling calendar.
