Mandelson

Lawyers for Peter Mandelson say his arrest was prompted by a “baseless” claim that he was planning to leave the UK permanently.

The former ambassador to the US was arrested at his London home on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released on bail. According to his legal team at Mishcon de Reya, there had been an agreement that he would attend a voluntary interview next month, but officers acted over concerns he was a potential flight risk — a claim his lawyers strongly deny.

The Metropolitan Police declined to comment.

The investigation reportedly relates to allegations that, while serving as a minister, Mandelson passed market-sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein. He denies any criminal wrongdoing and says he is cooperating fully with authorities.

He was bailed until the end of May as consultations between police and prosecutors continue.
