Gabon in Talks with Meta and TikTok Over Social Media Ban

The government of Gabon has confirmed it is in discussions with Meta and TikTok following the country’s suspension of social media platforms earlier this month.

Authorities say the temporary ban was introduced after online content allegedly fueled conflict, division, and the spread of defamatory, violent, and pornographic material. Deputy presidency spokeswoman Jennyfer Melodie Sambat stated that companies failed to respond adequately despite repeated government warnings.

TikTok has reportedly reached out to Gabon’s media regulator, expressing its commitment to maintaining a safe digital environment that respects citizens’ rights.

However, critics argue the move is excessive and unconstitutional. Despite the restrictions, many users continue to access platforms through VPN services, with Proton reporting a 60,000% surge in downloads since the suspension began.

Officials insist the ban is not permanent but remains in place pending improved regulation.
