U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that military operations against Iran could last for several weeks, even as the U.S. Department of State has urged American citizens in numerous countries to depart due to escalating regional tensions.
Trump said U.S. and allied military action, initially projected to last “four to five weeks,” could continue longer as the conflict unfolds, describing the capability to sustain operations if necessary. He acknowledged ongoing strikes and military objectives, even as Iranian forces and their allies have responded with attacks across the Gulf and on U.S. interests.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the State Department issued urgent advisories telling U.S. citizens to leave more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries — including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and others due to serious safety risks as regional airspace closures and combat activity disrupt normal life.
The advisory, issued by U.S. consular officials, stressed that Americans should “depart now” using any available commercial transport while it remains possible, as some airlines have canceled flights and airspace closures complicate departures.
The conflict, which intensified after coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces on Iranian territory, has already seen casualties among U.S. service members and expanded retaliatory actions by Iran and allied militias against regional partners.
Trump’s comments reflect the unpredictable nature of the crisis and underscore the administration’s preparedness for a protracted campaign if required. Analysts say prolonged military engagement could further strain international stability, affect global energy markets, and prolong uncertainty for civilians and foreign residents in the region.
U.S. officials have emphasized that diplomatic efforts remain in parallel with military operations, but with Iranian forces continuing to respond and the lack of a clear exit strategy, Trump’s warning that the conflict could extend beyond initial projections has heightened global concern.
