US Embassy

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security warning about a possible terror threat that could target American government facilities in Nigeria.

In a public advisory, the embassy said it had received information indicating a heightened risk of attacks against locations linked to the United States, including diplomatic and government facilities. The warning urged U.S. citizens in Nigeria to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.

The embassy did not provide specific details about the nature of the threat but stressed that security conditions could change quickly. Officials advised Americans to avoid large gatherings, review personal security plans and closely monitor local news and embassy updates.

As part of precautionary measures the embassy said certain services and movements involving its staff may be restricted while authorities assess the situation.

Security concerns in parts of Nigeria have persisted for years due to the activities of extremist groups, criminal gangs and separatist movements. Some regions have experienced attacks on security forces, public infrastructure and civilian targets.

The latest alert reflects ongoing efforts by U.S. diplomatic missions to keep citizens informed about potential threats abroad. Embassies regularly issue such advisories when intelligence suggests a possible risk to diplomatic facilities or American nationals.

The warning comes as Nigerian security agencies continue to monitor threats from militant organisations operating within the country and across the wider region. Authorities have increased surveillance and security around sensitive locations in response to previous incidents.

While the advisory does not confirm an imminent attack, it underscores the importance of caution for both embassy staff and American citizens living or travelling in Nigeria.

The United States Department of State encourages U.S. citizens overseas to register with its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so they can receive security updates and emergency notifications.
