Armed Gang Holds 25 Hostages in Naples Bank and Escapes Through Sewer System in Daring Heist

Armed robbers carried out a dramatic and carefully planned raid on a bank in Naples, Italy, holding 25 people hostage before escaping through a sewer tunnel in one of the country’s most audacious recent heists.

The incident took place at a Credit Agricole branch on Thursday morning. According to early reports from Italian authorities, a small group of three or four masked individuals entered the bank and quickly took control of the situation. Witnesses say the attackers were armed but did not use violence against customers or staff.

Once inside, the gang reportedly locked employees and customers in a secure room while they accessed areas of the bank containing safety deposit boxes. Hundreds of boxes were later found to have been opened and ransacked, though investigators say the total value of what was stolen remains unknown at this stage.

The hostages were held for several hours while the robbery unfolded. Emergency services were eventually alerted, and footage circulating on social media showed firefighters breaking windows to help evacuate people safely from the building. Authorities confirmed that all 25 hostages were released without injury.

Despite the tense situation, officials said there were no reports of physical harm or shots fired during the incident, which has surprised investigators given the scale and coordination of the operation.

One of the most striking elements of the case is the suspected escape route used by the robbers. Investigators believe the gang may have spent hours drilling through the bank floor during the night, creating access to a tunnel system connected to the city’s sewers.

After completing the robbery, the suspects allegedly escaped underground through the sewer network, disappearing before police arrived. Law enforcement teams have since launched searches of sewer tunnels and underground passages in the surrounding area, but no arrests have been made so far.

Local media reports suggest the group may have used masks depicting well-known actors while carrying out the robbery, adding another unusual detail to an already complex investigation. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area in an attempt to identify the suspects and track their movements before and after the heist.

The robbery has sparked widespread concern in Naples, with many residents gathering outside the bank demanding answers about how such a large-scale operation could be executed without detection. Questions have also been raised about how long the gang was inside the building before authorities were alerted.

Customers who were inside the bank during the incident described a frightening but controlled situation. One hostage told Italian media that staff and clients were locked together in a room while the robbers moved through the bank. Despite the fear, victims confirmed that the attackers did not act violently.

Another concern for investigators is the extent of the financial loss. Because the gang targeted safety deposit boxes rather than cash alone, authorities say it may take time to determine exactly what was stolen. Some boxes may have contained cash, valuables, or sensitive personal items belonging to private clients.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation, including forensic analysis of the bank premises and inspections of underground sewer routes believed to have been used in the escape. Specialist units are working to map possible exit points in the city’s drainage system.

Officials say the case remains active and highly complex due to the sophistication of the escape plan and the lack of immediate evidence linking suspects to the scene. For now, the focus remains on identifying the individuals involved and recovering any stolen property.

The incident has been described by local media as one of the most unusual bank robberies in recent years in Italy, not only because of the hostage situation but also because of the elaborate escape route and the apparent planning involved.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, while surveillance teams continue combing through footage and underground access points in hopes of tracking down the suspects.
