Tyla earns double BET Awards nominations for ‘Chanel’
South African music star Tyla has secured two nominations at the 2026 BET Awards for her hit single Chanel, continuing the song’s rapid global success.
The singer received nominations in both the “Video of the Year” and “Viewer’s Choice” categories, adding another major achievement to what has already become one of the biggest eras of her career.
Released in October 2025, “Chanel” quickly became a viral hit across streaming platforms and social media, fueled by a globally popular dance challenge that spread widely on TikTok and other platforms.
The music video also generated significant attention within fashion circles due to its heavy use of rare vintage Chanel archive pieces.
Styled by Tyla’s longtime stylist Ron Hartleben, the visual featured several iconic designs from the Karl Lagerfeld era of the luxury fashion house, including the famous white Chanel hula hoop bag from the brand’s 2013 spring/summer collection.
Additional looks included a quilted black bomber jacket from 1991 and vintage accessories previously associated with supermodels such as Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
Speaking to Vogue after the video’s release, Hartleben revealed the difficulty and expense involved in sourcing many of the archival pieces used in the production.
He described some of the fashion items as “museum-quality pieces” and explained that collectors entrusted the team with highly valuable garments and accessories.
Rather than recreating full runway looks, Hartleben said the creative direction focused on blending archival luxury fashion with Tyla’s own modern style and personality.
The strategy appeared to resonate strongly with audiences online, helping the visual become a major talking point beyond the music itself.
Commercially, “Chanel” also performed strongly worldwide.
The song debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Tyla’s third solo entry on the chart following the success of “Water” and “Push 2 Start.”
It also made history by debuting simultaneously at number one on both the US Afrobeats chart and the UK Afrobeats chart, making Tyla the first artist to achieve that feat at the same time.
Streaming numbers for the track surged globally on Spotify, while the accompanying dance trend spread internationally, including in Asia and the Middle East. Several K-pop stars also joined the viral trend online.
In April 2026, the Recording Industry Association of America officially certified “Chanel” Gold in the United States.
Tyla faces strong competition in the “Video of the Year” category alongside artists including Ella Mai, Doechii, Teyana Taylor, Kehlani, SZA, and Kendrick Lamar.
Her “Viewer’s Choice” nomination places her alongside major international names including Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Tems, and others.
The 2026 BET Awards will be hosted by comedian Druski and will air live on June 28 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The double nomination further strengthens Tyla’s growing international profile as one of Africa’s leading global music stars.
