Starmer Warns Tech Firms Over Child Online Safety or Face New Laws
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urged technology companies to take stronger action to protect children online, warning that firms must block minors from sending, receiving, or viewing sexually explicit images or risk new government legislation.
Starmer said tech platforms should introduce stricter device-level controls that prevent children from being exposed to or sharing explicit content. He emphasized that online safety must be treated as a priority, especially for younger users increasingly active on digital platforms.
The Prime Minister cautioned that if technology companies fail to implement effective safeguards voluntarily, the government will step in with new laws requiring them to do so. The proposed measures are aimed at tightening accountability within the tech industry.
Alongside the warning to companies, the government also announced plans to release updated guidance for parents. The guidance will focus on helping families better manage children’s screen time and monitor their online activity more effectively.
Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen child protection in the digital space, as concerns grow over exposure to harmful content and online exploitation.
