Haaland Fires Norway Past Brazil to Reach Historic World Cup Quarter-finals
Erling Haaland scored a brilliant second-half brace as Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil national football team 2-1 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.
Haaland produced a clinical display when it mattered most, breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute before sealing victory with a stunning strike from outside the penalty area in the 90th minute, sending Norway into the last eight and eliminating one of the tournament favourites.
Brazil were left to regret a series of missed opportunities, including an early penalty from Bruno Guimarães that was brilliantly saved by Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland in the 15th minute.
The South Americans also saw several promising chances go begging, with Vinícius Júnior and Endrick unable to find the breakthrough despite creating dangerous opportunities.
Norway thought they had taken the lead just four minutes into the match when Patrick Berg found the net, but the goal was ruled out after Alexander Sørloth was judged to be offside during the build-up.
After surviving Brazil’s early pressure, Norway gradually grew into the contest and capitalised late in the game. Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup delivered an excellent cross that Haaland headed past Alisson Becker to open the scoring.
The Manchester City striker then completed his match-winning performance with a powerful low drive from outside the box in stoppage time, taking his tally to seven goals in the tournament and moving level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Brazil managed a late consolation when referee Ismail Elfath awarded a second penalty after ruling that Leo Østigård had fouled Casemiro in the penalty area. Veteran forward Neymar converted from the spot, but it was too late to change the outcome.
The result marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and is likely to increase scrutiny on head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who took charge of the national team in 2025 after leaving Real Madrid.
Despite Brazil creating more chances and registering a higher expected goals (xG) total, Norway’s disciplined defending and outstanding goalkeeping proved decisive.
Norway will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between England national football team and Mexico national football team as they continue their dream World Cup campaign.
