Tyler Robinson, 23, appeared before the court as prosecutors began presenting evidence in the high-profile murder case. Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice, and witness tampering in connection with Kirk’s death. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges.

Charlie Kirk, a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump and the founder of the conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while addressing an audience on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The shooting triggered an intensive manhunt before authorities arrested Robinson two days later.

Prosecutors in Utah County are seeking the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. The preliminary hearing, which began on Monday, is expected to continue throughout the week as prosecutors present witness testimony and evidence supporting the charges.

Before the hearing, Kirk’s family released an emotional statement expressing the lasting impact of his death. The statement was issued jointly by his widow, Erika Kirk, his parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, and his sister, Mary.

They described Charlie as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend whose death has left an irreplaceable void in their lives. The family said every court appearance serves as a painful reminder of their loss and the grief they continue to endure, particularly for Kirk’s two young children.

The family also expressed gratitude for the support they have received from friends, supporters, and members of the public since the tragedy.

“We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received,” the statement said. They added that the encouragement from others has helped sustain them during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

While acknowledging the emotional nature of the proceedings, the family said they would not make further public comments out of respect for the judicial process. They also requested privacy as the legal case continues.

Inside the courtroom, Robinson appeared wearing a light-coloured suit and sat alongside his defence attorneys throughout the hearing. His legal team has previously attempted to prevent television cameras from covering the proceedings and has also asked the court to remove the possibility of the death penalty from the case. Those requests have so far been unsuccessful.

Prosecutors told the court that four law enforcement officers were expected to testify during the opening day of the hearing, providing evidence gathered during the investigation into Kirk’s death.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. If the judge finds probable cause, Robinson will face trial on all charges.

The case has attracted nationwide attention due to Kirk’s prominent role in conservative politics and his close ties to President Donald Trump. As proceedings continue, the focus remains on the evidence presented in court and the pursuit of justice for the slain activist.
