Haiti Fans Welcome Returning World Cup Heroes Amid Security Concerns
Members of Haiti’s national football team received a warm welcome in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday as fans celebrated the Grenadiers’ historic appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although Haiti failed to progress beyond the group stage and lost all of their matches, the team’s participation in football’s biggest tournament has become a source of national pride in a country battling poverty, political instability and escalating gang violence.
World Cup journey brings joy to Haitians
Haiti’s campaign may have ended early, but the team managed to score two goals against Morocco in their final group match, giving supporters moments to celebrate during a difficult period for the nation.
The World Cup appearance has provided a rare source of unity and joy for many Haitians amid ongoing economic hardship and insecurity.
Players arrive under heavy security
National team stars Duckens Nazon, Martin Expérience and Josué Duverger arrived in the capital under tight security.
The players travelled in a black vehicle with tinted windows and were escorted to several locations across Port-au-Prince as supporters attempted to catch a glimpse of their football heroes.
The squad also held private meetings with government officials, including Haiti’s tourism and culture ministers.
Fans disappointed by restrictions
Despite the celebrations, many supporters expressed frustration over the strict security arrangements that prevented them from interacting with the players.
Several dozen fans gathered outside the National Pantheon Museum of Haiti, hoping to meet the footballers and take photographs.
The museum is located in an area that until recently was controlled by armed gangs, highlighting the security challenges facing the country.
According to reports, armed groups still control an estimated 70 percent of Port-au-Prince.
“The players wanted to come and talk to us, but they blocked us from seeing them,” supporter Samuel Jean said.
Planned city tour cancelled
Fans were also disappointed after a planned tour of the city involving the players was cancelled without explanation at the last minute.
Many had hoped the event would provide an opportunity to celebrate the team’s achievements more closely.
Despite the restrictions, supporters continued gathering in large numbers, eager to show appreciation for a team that made history simply by reaching the World Cup.
Football offers hope amid crisis
Haiti’s participation in the tournament has served as a rare positive story for the Caribbean nation, which continues to struggle with widespread insecurity and humanitarian challenges.
For many citizens, the Grenadiers’ journey to the World Cup represented resilience, determination and national pride.
While their campaign may have ended in the group stage, the players returned home as heroes, bringing a brief moment of hope and celebration to a country in desperate need of both.
