Teenager Arrested After Two Girls Seriously Injured in German School Attack
A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested following an attack at a secondary school in southern Germany that left two 13-year-old girls seriously injured.
Police said the incident took place at Welfen-Gymnasium secondary school in the small town of Schongau in Upper Bavaria, triggering a major security operation in the area.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was carrying both a knife and a firearm at the time of the incident and currently believe the teenager acted alone.
Two Students Seriously Injured
The two girls who were injured are receiving medical treatment and are not believed to be in life-threatening condition, according to police.
Officials said they are still working to determine the full extent of the injuries and whether any other individuals were affected during the incident.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, while police secured the school and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Details of Attack Still Unclear
A police spokesperson initially said it remained unclear what weapon had been used during the incident and declined to confirm reports that the girls had been stabbed.
However, Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, later told German public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk that he believed the victims had suffered stab wounds, although this has not been officially confirmed by investigators.
Police have described the incident as a suspected “rampage” and are continuing to gather evidence.
Suspect’s Identity Yet to Be Released
Authorities have not released the identity of the 16-year-old suspect, and it remains unclear whether the teenager currently attended the school or had any direct connection to it.
Interior Minister Herrmann said there were unconfirmed indications that the suspect may have previously been a student at the school. He also stated that the teenager had reportedly received psychiatric treatment in the past.
Investigators are expected to examine the suspect’s background and possible motives as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Support Measures Put in Place
Following the attack, local authorities established a support centre for parents and relatives of students at a nearby fire station.
The incident has shocked the community of Schongau, where Welfen-Gymnasium has been a longstanding educational institution.
According to information on the school’s website, Welfen-Gymnasium was founded in 1887 and was originally an almost exclusively girls’ school. It has operated as a mixed-gender institution for the past four decades.
Investigation Continues
Police have urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue and more details emerge.
The incident is the latest school-related attack to raise concerns about safety and security in educational institutions across Europe.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as they continue to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
