Fifa Investigates Argentina After World Cup Final Clash
Fifa has opened a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following a heated confrontation involving players and staff after their World Cup final defeat to Spain.
The incident happened after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory at MetLife Stadium, with several Argentina players and officials accused of engaging in clashes with Spain’s team during the celebrations.
Fifa’s disciplinary committee has appointed a prosecutor to examine the events. Players or coaches found responsible could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) may also receive a fine.
Among those reportedly involved were Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Fifa initially reported that Paredes had been sent off for an altercation with Spain defender Eric Garcia but later confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken during the match.
The trouble began shortly after the final whistle when Spain players celebrated their historic World Cup win. Rodri, who had been substituted during extra time, joined his teammates on the pitch and became involved in a confrontation with Argentina defender Molina, sparking a wider dispute.
Former England striker Alan Shearer criticised the scenes, saying there was “no place” for such behaviour after a match. Other pundits also condemned the actions, arguing that teams must show respect even after painful defeats.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni attempted to calm the situation and insisted his team accepted the loss, saying they knew how to handle defeat.
Fifa will now assess whether the actions violated its rules on fair play, player conduct and behaviour that damages the reputation of football. The governing body has the power to issue global bans if players or officials are found guilty.
The investigation comes as Argentina already faces possible punishment over a separate incident involving a banner supporting the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands after their semi-final win against England.
The AFA has previously faced disciplinary action for player conduct, including after Argentina’s celebrations following their 2022 World Cup victory over France. The team was fined, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez later received bans for separate incidents.
Fifa has not set a timeline for completing the investigation, but any sanctions could affect Argentina’s players and officials in future international competitions.
