Former Manchester City Boss Chooses Career Break Instead
Pep Guardiola has turned down the opportunity to become the next manager of the Italian national team, opting instead to continue his planned break from football after leaving Manchester City.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had approached the Spanish coach in an effort to appoint one of the world’s most successful managers to lead the Azzurri.
However, Guardiola has decided not to return to coaching at this stage.
Italy Offered Major Incentives
FIGC president Giovanni Malagò confirmed earlier this week that discussions had taken place with Guardiola and indicated the federation was prepared to make exceptions regarding his salary.
Reports suggest Italy also offered Guardiola significant freedom to shape the national team project according to his vision.
Despite the attractive proposal, the former Manchester City manager informed the federation that he wants to step away from football for now.
Guardiola Prioritises Family and Rest
After a decade at Manchester City, Guardiola plans to use his time away from coaching to rest, spend more time with his family and travel.
The decision follows an intense 10-year spell in England, during which he established himself as one of the most successful managers in football history.
His break means he will not take charge of Italy as they attempt to rebuild following recent disappointments on the international stage.
Italy Continue Search for New Coach
FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini revealed that Italy initially approached former national team midfielder Carlo Ancelotti.
However, Ancelotti chose to remain as Brazil’s head coach, leaving Italy to explore other options.
With Guardiola also declining the role, the federation must continue its search for a new manager.
Pirlo Emerges as Leading Candidate
Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has now emerged as the favourite to become the country’s next head coach.
Pirlo is currently managing Dubai-based United FC and could be tasked with leading Italy through a challenging UEFA Nations League group featuring France, Belgium and Turkey.
He would also be responsible for guiding the four-time world champions towards qualification for UEFA Euro 2028 after Italy failed to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups.
