Senegal President Visits Mali for Talks With Junta Leader
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has arrived in Mali for an official visit aimed at strengthening relations and holding discussions with the country’s military leader, Assimi Goita.
The meeting between the two leaders is expected to focus on regional security, military cooperation and trade issues affecting both West African nations.
A key topic of discussion will be transport and trade links between the two countries. Mali, a landlocked nation, relies heavily on Senegal’s port of Dakar to import and export goods. However, freight movement between the two countries has faced difficulties in recent months due to repeated attacks by jihadist groups.
The visit comes as West Africa continues to deal with growing security challenges caused by extremist violence, particularly in the Sahel region. Both Senegal and Mali have expressed interest in improving cooperation to address shared threats.
Earlier this year, Mali announced that it had joined forces with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger to carry out air strikes against jihadist groups operating in the region. The three countries have increased military cooperation after forming closer alliances following political tensions with regional organisations.
Assimi Goita has led Mali since 2021 after taking power through a military coup. His government has faced international criticism over military rule and delays in returning to civilian governance.
Despite political differences, Senegal has maintained diplomatic engagement with Mali, with President Faye seeking dialogue and stronger partnerships across West Africa since taking office.
The discussions are expected to highlight the importance of regional cooperation at a time when insecurity continues to affect communities, businesses and transportation networks across the Sahel.
For Mali, improving access to trade routes remains a major priority because the country depends on neighbouring states for international commerce. Senegal’s Dakar port serves as a crucial gateway for many Malian imports and exports.
The visit also reflects broader efforts by West African leaders to maintain cooperation despite political changes and security challenges affecting the region.
As President Faye meets with Mali’s military leadership, both countries are expected to explore ways to improve economic ties, strengthen border security and support stability in West Africa.
