Buildings collapse as rescue teams search for survivors

At least 111 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, according to local officials.

Strong tremors felt across region

The earthquake struck the Chocó region at 07:34 local time on Monday at a depth of 107 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey. Strong shaking was felt across Colombia and in neighbouring Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama.

Several buildings collapsed following the earthquake, leaving people trapped beneath rubble. Emergency teams have been deployed to affected areas as rescue operations continue.

Rescue efforts underway

Rescuers are working to reach people who may still be trapped under collapsed structures while authorities assess the extent of the damage and casualties.

Region faces recent earthquake disaster

The latest earthquake comes less than two months after two powerful earthquakes struck parts of Venezuela, killing more than 6,100 people.
