Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has opened up about her secret relationship, musical evolution and determination to follow her own creative path as she prepares to release her new album, Starrgirl.
Recovery did not slow her down
Just two weeks before the album’s release, Starr revealed that she had undergone major surgery. Although she initially expected a quick recovery, she said the procedure was more complicated than anticipated.
Despite the setback, the singer was back in the dance studio within a week, rehearsing for upcoming performances while still recovering. She also returned to television appearances, fan events and live performances.
Her determination reflects the resilience that has become a defining part of her career.
From YouTube covers to global star
Starr was discovered after posting cover songs on YouTube at 18. Since then, she has achieved several milestones, including becoming the first African woman to win Best International Act at the MOBO Awards.
She was also the first Nigerian woman to surpass one billion YouTube video views and became the first Afrobeats artist to perform on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage in 2024.
Her growing international profile has also led to collaborations and connections with artists including Coldplay, Tyla, David Guetta, Kelly Rowland and LE SSERAFIM.
A playful connection with Stevie Wonder
Starr’s personality was also on display when music legend Stevie Wonder called to congratulate her on a Grammy nomination.
Instead of simply accepting the praise, Starr jokingly challenged Wonder over their zodiac signs. The playful exchange, she recalled, became something of a friendly competition.
She described the conversation as “very cute” while expressing her admiration for the legendary musician.
New album explores heartbreak
Her upcoming album features collaborations with Wizkid, Rema, Zayn Malik and KWN and marks her first project under a new management deal with Roc Nation.
The album also reflects a more personal side of Starr. One song was inspired by a secret relationship that had become emotionally difficult but remained familiar.
She explained that staying in the relationship began affecting other areas of her life, eventually forcing her to choose her priorities and focus more strongly on her music.
Refusing to follow expectations
Starr says the experience also mirrors her wider approach to music. Following the success of Rush and The Year I Turned 21, she began feeling pressure to reproduce the sounds that audiences already knew.
Rather than conforming, she chose to experiment.
Her new music moves between Afrobeats, electronic sounds and other international influences, including Bouyon on Ms Paper. The song was created during a late-night studio session in Los Angeles and has already attracted attention through viral live clips.
Celebrating Nigerian identity
While some critics have accused Starr of moving too far from her Nigerian musical roots, she rejects the idea that embracing global sounds means abandoning her culture.
Her album artwork combines a modern gold outfit with a traditional Nigerian gele headwrap, reflecting her belief that young Nigerians can embrace their heritage while exploring new creative possibilities.
With Starrgirl, Ayra Starr appears determined to define herself on her own terms, combining ambition, experimentation and cultural pride as she enters another stage of her career.
