Ivory hidden inside timber logs discovered at Quy Nhon port
Ivory shipment intercepted
Vietnamese police have seized nearly 1.2 tonnes of ivory at Quy Nhon port in Gia Lai province after discovering the material hidden inside timber logs.
Authorities found the ivory concealed inside 12 logs that had been hollowed out to hide sawn elephant tusks.
Shipment disguised with wax
Police said the ivory had also been covered with wax in an apparent attempt to avoid detection.
Around 80 kilograms of other animal bones were also discovered inside the containers.
Protected species involved
Authorities identified the ivory as coming from the Elephantidae family, while the other bones belonged to the Felidae family.
Both groups are protected under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Illegal wildlife trade
The seizure highlights Vietnam’s role as a transit point in the illegal wildlife trade, with traffickers using shipping routes and concealment methods to move protected animal products across borders.
The latest discovery underscores continued efforts by authorities to intercept illegal wildlife shipments and protect endangered species.
