Moroccan authorities have taken into custody than 100 migrants near the town of Fnideq in the north. This is because they were worried about a group of people trying to cross into Ceuta, which is a part of Spain.
The police in Morocco said they caught 111 people near Fnideq, which is also known as Castillejos. This town is very close to Ceuta, about 3 kilometers away. Most of the people they caught were from Africa from countries that’re south of the Sahara desert.
The police were ready for trouble wearing gear to protect themselves. They even used tear gas to break up groups of migrants who were gathering on hills near the town.
This all happened two weeks after a lot of migrants tried to get into Ceuta. Around 78,000 people arrived in Ceuta by boat in a few hours. The mayor of Ceuta said that 100 people died when this happened. Most of the people who came to Ceuta went back to Morocco after that.
The police were on alert near Fnideq after all those migrants came to Ceuta. There were messages on media saying that another big group of people might try to cross into Ceuta over the weekend.
The government of Morocco said they were watching these messages on media. They were trying to figure out who was sending them. The government warned people that if they tried to organize or take part in these crossing attempts they could get in trouble with the law.
These latest arrests show that there are still a lot of people trying to get into Ceuta, which’s one of two places that belong to Spain in Africa.
