Nigerian comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has admitted to having turned down several movies due to fears of being stereotyped at the early stages of his acting career as he believed he could have done much better as an actor.
Talking about his rejection of some roles, Bovi explained that he had a lot of fame with his portrayal of a particular character hence offers which kept trying to stereotype him with such characters.
According to the comedian, among the roles he had refused were those that included acting as rustic village men, gatekeepers, and other passive characters. This, he explained, is because he believed he was still very young and it was not yet time to stereotype himself with such roles.
“There was more to me,” Bovi stated, adding that his exposure to different film industries when he was growing up made him see the dangers of being stereotyped.
The comedian agreed that it is not necessarily a bad thing for someone to be stereotyped as long as that is what you want out of your career. Nevertheless, he insisted that his ambition was greater than this.
