On August 25 2026 the court officially notified Mondlane that he would be tried on five charges. These include promoting crime encouraging mass disobedience stirring up criminal behavior and inciting terrorism. Mondlane has denied each of these charges. He is not in custody at this time.

The prosecution filed the charges in July 2025 accusing Mondlane of playing a role in the unrest that followed the election. Reports indicate that than 300 people lost their lives during the period of demonstrations and clashes.

According to results Mondlane came in second place in the 2024 election. He refused to accept the outcome insisting that he had actually won the election. His supporters responded by organizing large-scale protests across the country.

Before returning to Mozambique in January 2025 Mondlane went into self-imposed exile. After his return he held meetings with President Daniel Chapo aiming to reduce tensions and resolve the political conflict. Still the dispute over the election result has not been settled.

Mondlane is currently a member of the Council of State. In June 2026 his legal immunity was suspended, which allowed the criminal case to proceed. This move has raised questions about the balance between rights and legal accountability.

Mondlane has also challenged the basis for lifting his immunity arguing that the decision was improperly made. His case has stirred debate over the way to handle Mozambique’s political crisis—through the justice system or, through political talks.

The outcome of the trial could seriously affect Mondlane’s path. A conviction might block him from running in elections.. So far no verdict has been reached and the court has not yet ruled on the truth of the charges.
