Turkish authorities have detained 47 people during raids on gay bars and the homes of LGBTQ+ activists across 12 provinces, officials say. The operations were conducted under the government’s “My Family is Safe” campaign, which authorities say aims to protect traditional family values.

Police detained 26 people and seized drugs, digital equipment, smuggled alcohol and a firearm, according to Istanbul prosecutors. Another 21 people were detained in Ankara in an investigation involving LGBTQ+ organisation Kaos GL.

Kaos GL said around 50 activists were detained, including more than 10 people arrested during home raids. The organisation also claimed authorities blocked websites and social media accounts belonging to LGBTQ+ groups.

Human rights organisations have accused the Turkish government of using the campaign to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. Same-sex relationships remain legal in Turkey, but same-sex marriage is not recognised.
