Tyla Ranks Iconic South African Snacks From Ghost Pops to Peppermint Crisp

Tyla Takes on South African Snack Challenge

South African superstar Tyla has shared her personal ranking of some of the country’s most recognisable snacks during an appearance with Elle UK. The singer was presented with a mystery box containing familiar South African treats and asked to taste and rank them.

Nando’s Is Her First Stop

Before getting into the snacks, Tyla revealed that Nando’s is one of the first places she visits whenever she returns to South Africa. Her usual order includes an extra-hot quarter chicken and chips, a Nando’s roll, chicken livers and a Sprite. She also said that after a night out with friends, she enjoys having a braai with her family.

Ghost Pops Take the Top Spot

Ghost Pops immediately impressed Tyla, with the Simba snack earning a place at the top of her initial ranking. The singer described them as the best among the treats she sampled, highlighting her continued connection to familiar South African flavours.

Baxtons Apricots Bring Childhood Memories

Baxtons Apricots brought back memories of Tyla’s childhood. However, she joked that she was now “allergic” to the sweet after eating so many of them when she was younger, which affected where she placed it in her ranking.

Peppermint Crisp Gets a Mixed Reaction

Peppermint Crisp was another memorable entry. Tyla revealed that she enjoys the chocolate so much that a Peppermint Crisp tart is among the desserts she might make for someone. At the same time, she joked that the strong mint flavour can taste a little like toothpaste.

Sparletta Sparberry Reminds Her of Medicine

The bright red Sparletta Sparberry drink also came with a childhood memory. Tyla said her mother used to tell her that the drink was medicine when she was young. After tasting it again, she said the association had stayed with her because it still tasted like medicine.

Mrs Balls Chutney Chips Move Up

Tyla initially underestimated Simba Mrs Balls Chutney chips but later changed her mind. She admitted that she had made a mistake with her original ranking and moved the snack higher, even placing it above Ghost Pops.

Romany Creams Have a Family Connection

Romany Creams reminded Tyla of her father because she used to buy the biscuits for his birthday. However, she explained that she is not particularly fond of biscuits herself, meaning the family connection did not push the snack very high on her list.

Fizzer Brings Back a Dramatic Story

The Fizzer prompted one of Tyla’s funniest childhood memories. She recalled being stopped by a security guard who suspected that she and her sister had stolen the sweet from a shop. Security footage later showed that they had entered the store already carrying an ice cream, proving they had not stolen the Fizzer. Tyla described the experience as “so dramatic” and placed the sweet at the bottom of her ranking.

Biltong Makes a Strong Impression

Biltong also featured among Tyla’s favourites. She said she loves it because it is “actual real meat” and highlighted its protein content. The traditional dried meat proved to be one of the snacks that received a particularly positive reaction from the singer.

Braai Beats Bunny Chow

When asked to choose between two iconic South African foods, a braai and bunny chow, Tyla chose the braai. She explained that she enjoys the variety, including different types of meat and salad, making it a meal she associates with time spent at home.

A Taste of Home for the Global Star

Tyla’s snack challenge offered a glimpse into the food and childhood memories that continue to connect her with South Africa despite her international career. From Ghost Pops and biltong to Peppermint Crisp and Fizzers, the treats brought back stories from different stages of her childhood.
