Royal Navy sailor charged with spying for foreign power
A 24-year-old Royal Navy sailor has been charged with national security offences over allegations that he obtained protected information for the benefit of an unnamed foreign power.
Sailor charged under National Security Act
Teddy Young, a member of the Royal Navy from Bedfordshire, was arrested at his home on Tuesday, October 6. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised two charges under the National Security Act 2023 following a Counter Terrorism Policing London investigation.
Alleged disclosure of protected information
Police allege that between November 26, 2024 and May 21, 2025, Young engaged in conduct in preparation for disclosing protected information. He is also accused of obtaining, copying, recording or retaining protected information while intending to benefit a foreign power.
Foreign power remains unnamed
Authorities have not identified the foreign country allegedly connected to the case. Police said the information was allegedly obtained in circumstances where Young knew, or should reasonably have known, that his conduct could be prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom.
Police describe charges as serious
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, described the allegations as serious because they involve a serving member of the armed forces. She said police had worked closely with the Ministry of Defence and other operational partners during the investigation.
RAF Fairford case separate
Police stressed that Young’s arrest and charges are not connected to the recent investigation into suspicious activity near RAF Fairford. Several men were previously arrested in connection with that separate investigation and later released on bail.
Young remains in custody
Young has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 8. The case will now proceed through the courts as prosecutors pursue the allegations against him.
Royal Navy declines further comment
A Royal Navy spokesperson confirmed that a service member had been charged but said it would be inappropriate to comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing.
