South African Police Deputy Chief Resigns
South Africa’s suspended deputy police chief, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned amid corruption allegations and criminal charges involving alleged sexual offences, as investigations into police misconduct continue.
Resignation Submitted Before Hearing
Sibiya’s lawyers submitted his resignation letter on Monday, shortly before a disciplinary hearing against him was due to begin. Police authorities said his departure would be treated as a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings were still underway.
Sibiya Faces Criminal Charges
Sibiya remains in prison after being arrested last month over allegations of rape and grooming a minor. He denies the charges, while his bail application has been postponed until October 13.
Corruption Inquiry Continues
The former deputy police chief is also under scrutiny by a judicial commission investigating alleged corruption within the South African Police Service and possible links between officers and criminal networks. During testimony, Sibiya denied allegations that he received substantial sums of money and gifts from individuals accused of criminal activity.
Investigation Into Police Misconduct
Sibiya had been suspended since September last year. His resignation marks a further development in the wider investigation into alleged corruption within South Africa’s police service. The criminal allegations against him remain allegations, and he has denied the charges.
