Pope leaves hospital after surgery

The 71-year-old pontiff was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Saturday, walking unaided and greeting well-wishers outside. Among them was a 13-year-old Ukrainian girl who presented him with a stuffed toy. Doctors said blood tests and an X-ray indicated that he was ready to leave hospital. The nodule removed during Tuesday’s operation was diagnosed as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer.

Sunday blessing planned

Leo is expected to deliver his traditional Sunday blessing from a window overlooking St Peter’s Square. Despite his hospital stay, he continued working, receiving cardinals and speaking by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the call, he raised concerns about civilians in Oleshky, southern Ukraine.

November trip remains uncertain

The Vatican is reviewing the pope’s planned Latin American visit from November 6 to 17. The trip is scheduled to include Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, where Leo previously served as a missionary and bishop. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the decision would depend on the pope’s condition following his discharge. The Vatican has not confirmed whether the visit will proceed.

Vatican considers leadership arrangements

Leo’s diagnosis has raised questions within the Vatican about the implications for his papacy. Parolin said he did not believe the pope had prepared a resignation letter in case a serious illness prevented him from carrying out his duties. Days before his surgery, Leo confirmed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals. The dean plays an important role in preparations for a papal conclave and may preside over the election process if eligible. Tagle, 69, has previously been mentioned as a possible future pope, although no immediate change in papal leadership is anticipated.
