Martinez confirms successful operation

The 34-year-old Argentina international reportedly suffered a broken jaw after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Martinez received treatment for eight minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso later said the goalkeeper had also suffered concussion. In a social media update on Sunday, Martinez thanked supporters for their messages and confirmed that the operation had gone well. He also celebrated Chelsea’s victory and clean sheet, adding that he expected to be back in a few weeks.

Penders set for extended run

Mike Penders, who replaced Martinez and made his Premier League debut, is expected to feature in at least Chelsea’s next three matches. Chelsea face Tottenham and Manchester United in the league, with a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool scheduled between those fixtures.

Alonso backs Chelsea’s young goalkeeper

Alonso praised the 21-year-old Penders, highlighting his confidence and the trust the club has in him. The goalkeeper joined Chelsea from Belgian side Genk in 2024 for £17 million and has previously featured in cup matches. Alonso said the squad must be ready to step up whenever needed, adding that Penders performed well after coming on against Everton.
