Paris Suburb Shooting Leaves One Dead, Four Injured

One person has been killed and at least four others injured in a shooting across two towns near Paris, as French anti-terrorism prosecutors investigate whether the attack was linked to terrorism or racial motives. The suspected gunman has been arrested, but authorities have yet to establish his motive.

Gunman Fires at People From Car

The shooting occurred on Friday morning, 23 October, in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière in the Yvelines department, south-west of Paris.

According to Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh, a man drove through several neighbourhoods and fired at people he encountered along the way. The shooting reportedly affected multiple locations, including a health centre, a petrol station and several vehicles.

Rabeh said the gunman appeared to be firing indiscriminately, seemingly intent on causing as many casualties as possible.

“He wanted to cause carnage,” the mayor told French broadcaster BFMTV.

The attack prompted an emergency response from police and medical services as authorities worked to assess the casualties and establish what had happened.

Suspect Arrested After Attack

The suspected attacker was arrested in the nearby town of Coignières shortly after the shooting, which reportedly began at around 10:30am local time.

French media reported that the 39-year-old suspect was known to police but not to France’s intelligence services. Authorities have not publicly established why he carried out the attack.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the incident as resembling a murderous rampage, while cautioning that the motive remained unclear.

Police said the suspect had reportedly used an older-style semi-automatic weapon capable of firing in bursts. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding its use and whether the weapon falls into a category associated with military-grade firearms.

Anti-Terrorism Prosecutors Take Over

France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office has taken charge of the investigation, examining whether the shooting constituted murder connected to a terrorist enterprise.

The inquiry also includes allegations concerning the possession of a Category A weapon and possible involvement in a terrorist group planning crimes against people.

Authorities are also examining whether racial, ethnic, national or religious motives may have played a role. The fact that some victims reportedly had African or North African backgrounds has prompted questions, but investigators have not confirmed a motive.

The involvement of anti-terrorism prosecutors does not, by itself, establish that the shooting was politically or ideologically motivated.

Child Among Those Reportedly Injured

At least four people were injured in addition to the person who died. French media reported that a 12-year-old girl was among the wounded, while other victims included adults.

Some reports said several of the injured were in critical condition. The full extent of their injuries and the circumstances in which each person was targeted remained under investigation.

Authorities continued gathering evidence from the affected locations as emergency services responded to the incident.

French Leaders Respond

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the events as “very serious” and said security forces and judicial authorities had mobilised their resources.

President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his sympathy for the victims and their families, stating that the nation stood alongside them during what he described as a terrible ordeal.

The shooting comes as France prepares for further protests over the cost of living on Saturday, following violent unrest surrounding demonstrations the previous weekend. Authorities have been increasing security measures amid concerns about further disorder.

Investigation Continues

Investigators are now working to establish the suspect’s motive, the sequence of events and whether the attack was connected to terrorism or a potential hate crime.
