Chris Brown Faces Sentencing Over 2023 London Nightclub Attack
American singer Chris Brown is due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court in London over a nightclub attack in which music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw was struck with a glass bottle in February 2023.
The 37-year-old singer pleaded guilty to affray in July, following an incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to the same offence and is due to be sentenced alongside him. <Cite refs={[“turn316529search0″,”turn316529news21”]}/>
Prosecutors described the incident as a “vicious and unprovoked attack”, alleging that Brown struck Diaw over the head twice with a glass bottle in the crowded nightclub. Akinlolu allegedly joined the assault, punching the victim before both men continued attacking him as he tried to escape.
Diaw suffered head and knee injuries and required hospital treatment.
The case is being heard at Southwark Crown Court, where Brown is expected to learn whether he will receive a custodial sentence. Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment, although a prison term can be suspended.
More serious charges dropped
Brown had initially denied more serious allegations, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He also faced a charge involving possession of an offensive weapon.
However, after Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray in July, prosecutors discontinued the other charges. The sentencing hearing will therefore focus on the offence they admitted.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 19 February 2023, when Diaw was at Tape nightclub in Hanover Square. Prosecutors said surveillance footage captured the confrontation.
Following the incident, police discovered that Brown and Akinlolu had left the United Kingdom, and a warrant was issued for their arrest.
Brown returned to Britain in May 2025 for a concert in Manchester as part of his world tour. He was arrested at a hotel in the city and was initially refused bail. He was later released after agreeing to provide £5 million in security, allowing him to continue his tour before returning for sentencing. <Cite refs={[“turn316529search0″,”turn316529news21”]}/>
Fans gather in support
A group of Brown’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse ahead of the hearing, with some travelling from other parts of the United Kingdom and Europe.
One fan told a reporter that she wanted to support the singer and hoped he would receive a fine or suspended sentence.
Brown, who rose to fame as a teenager in 2005, remains one of R&B’s most recognised performers. However, his career has also been marked by legal controversies, including his 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-partner, singer Rihanna.
The latest case has drawn considerable attention because of Brown’s international profile and the possibility of a prison sentence.
Akinlolu is also awaiting his sentence for affray. Both men admitted the offence relating to the nightclub incident.
The court’s decision is expected to determine the next stage for the singer, whose legal case has followed him since the incident more than three years ago.
