Tinubu Travels to Saudi Arabia for Umrah to Pray for Nigeria Ahead of 2027 Election
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has travelled to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the lesser Hajj pilgrimage, known as Umrah, and offer prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity and stability ahead of the country’s 2027 general election.
The Presidency announced the visit on Wednesday, 28 October, saying the 74-year-old president would use the pilgrimage for spiritual reflection and to seek divine guidance for the country and its people.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu would perform the religious rites associated with Umrah while praying for Nigeria’s continued progress.
The president is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing the pilgrimage. <Cite refs={[“turn432922search0″,”turn432922search3”]}/>
Re-election bid included in prayers
Tinubu’s media aide, Olusegun Dada, also confirmed that the president would commit his re-election ambition to God during the visit.
In a statement on social media, Dada explained that the trip was part of Tinubu’s religious practice ahead of major political milestones.
He recalled that the president travelled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah in 2022 while campaigning for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket.
The latest pilgrimage comes as Tinubu prepares for another election campaign, with Nigerians scheduled to vote on 16 January 2027.
His major political challengers are expected to include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who also contested the 2023 presidential election. <Cite refs={[“turn432922search7″,”turn432922news12”]}/>
Presidency dismisses medical treatment speculation
The announcement also followed speculation on social media about the president’s health after a video involving First Lady Oluremi Tinubu circulated online during the APC campaign launch in Kaduna.
Some commentators questioned whether the Saudi Arabian visit was intended for medical examinations rather than religious activities.
However, Dada dismissed the claims, insisting that Tinubu was travelling to perform Umrah and pray for the country.
The Presidency has maintained that the visit is religious in nature and has not announced any medical engagements during the trip.
What is Umrah?
Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, one of the holiest cities in Islam. It is commonly referred to as the lesser Hajj because it involves several religious rites also associated with the major annual pilgrimage.
Unlike Hajj, which takes place during specific dates in the Islamic calendar and is obligatory once in a lifetime for Muslims who meet the required conditions, Umrah can be performed throughout the year.
The pilgrimage includes circumambulating the Kaaba and walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah as acts of worship and devotion.
Tinubu, a Muslim from southern Nigeria, last performed the pilgrimage in 2022 ahead of his successful presidential campaign.
Nigeria faces security and economic challenges
The president’s visit comes as Nigeria continues to face significant economic and security challenges ahead of the 2027 election.
The country is dealing with an Islamist insurgency in the northeast, armed criminal gangs involved in kidnapping and ransom attacks, communal clashes over land and resources, and separatist unrest in parts of the southeast.
Economic pressures, including the cost of living, fuel prices and household financial difficulties, are also expected to feature prominently in the election campaign.
Nigeria is home to a population with strong Christian and Muslim communities, and religion continues to play an important role in public and political life.
As Tinubu undertakes the pilgrimage, attention will increasingly turn to his administration’s efforts to address the country’s challenges and his preparations for another presidential contest.
