Court of Appeal Acquits Mechanic Wrongfully Convicted As notorious robber Ataa Ayi’s Accomplice

ACCRA – In a landmark ruling, the Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged Yaw Asante Agyekum, who was wrongfully convicted in 2002 as an alleged accomplice of notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi.

Agyekum, who served 23 years of a 35-year sentence for conspiracy to commit robbery, was found to have been wrongfully convicted. The court held that the prosecution failed to prove Agyekum’s involvement beyond reasonable doubt.

Agyekum maintained his innocence throughout his trial and incarceration, stating he only knew Ataa Ayi as a client whose motorbike he repaired. The acquittal brings closure to Agyekum’s decades-long battle for justice.

The acquittal has sparked calls from human rights groups for a review of similar cases. Legal analysts have also questioned the justice system’s reliance on weak or circumstantial evidence.

Agyekum, who was arrested in 2001 while in church, hopes to rebuild his life after over two decades in prison. His case raises questions about reparations for wrongful imprisonment and support for reintegration.
