Security breaches and ticketing chaos mar Kenya’s historic CHAN win, sparking suspensions and investigations.

Ticket Sales Suspended Amid CHAOS at CHAN Match in Kenya

Ticket sales for several African Nations Championship (CHAN) games in Nairobi –  Kenya have been paused following disorderly scenes during Kenya’s surprising 1-0 victory over Morocco. The match took place at a packed Kasarani Stadium but was overshadowed by security breaches and overcrowding.

Security Breaches and Overcrowding Mar Exciting Win

Kenya’s Harambee Stars stunned pre-tournament favourites Morocco, but the win was tainted by incidents including a broken gate, fans entering without tickets, overcrowding beyond the stadium’s 48,063 capacity, and even invasions into media areas. Police reportedly used tear gas to control fans trying to enter through a lower gate.

Ticketing Problems Spark Illegal Entries and Chaos

Mookh Africa, the official ticketing partner in Kenya, confirmed ticket sales for upcoming matches at the Moi International Sports Centre have been halted until further notice. Fans faced issues with duplicated tickets sold by rogue vendors, leaving many stranded outside the stadium despite holding valid tickets.

CAF Investigations and Stakeholder Responses

Security breaches and ticketing chaos mar Kenya’s historic CHAN win.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed concern over the security situation and launched investigations through its disciplinary and safety committees. A CAF spokesperson said they are working with the Kenyan government and local organisers to address these issues but denied suspending ticket sales directly.

Past Fines and Ongoing Security Challenges

This incident comes days after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was fined $20,000 by CAF for previous crowd control and security failures. Kenya co-hosts CHAN alongside Tanzania and Uganda and will jointly stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, putting additional pressure on organisers to improve safety standards.

Fan Frustration Leads to Dangerous Overcrowding

With frustration growing due to ticketing problems and counterfeit sales, some fans jumped over stadium fences less than 30 minutes before kick-off, leading to a near stampede and severe overcrowding inside. Fans even occupied the press box, causing concerns among Moroccan media members.

Calls for Reform in Ticketing and Security Measures

Supporters and observers are urging organisers to fix the online ticketing system and crack down on illegal reselling. With three more matches scheduled at Kasarani, including Kenya’s game against Zambia and a quarter-final tie, authorities face mounting pressure to ensure safety and restore fan confidence.
