Cape Town’s theatre scene is buzzing this October as stages across the city host a mix of dance, comedy, and music theatre. With local talent sharing the spotlight with international performers, audiences can look forward to an exciting blend of cultural exchange, classic reinventions, and original productions. Three standout shows Dance Intersect 2025, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, and The Tramp are set to light up the city in the coming days.
Dance Intersect 2025: A Celebration of Movement
Kicking off the month is Dance Intersect 2025, a dynamic production that brings together local and international dance companies in a shared celebration of movement. The programme offers a rare opportunity for Cape Town audiences to witness the cross-pollination of styles and cultures on one stage.
Fragmented Landscape Premiere
One of the most anticipated features is the world premiere of Fragmented Landscape, choreographed by Anderson Carvalho in collaboration with Dutch company DOX. The piece explores themes of displacement, connection, and resilience through contemporary movement. Performed by a mixed cast of South African and international dancers, it promises to deliver both intensity and beauty.
International and Local Highlights
The Greek National Opera Ballet adds a global dimension with a performance that blends classical precision and modern flair. Meanwhile, New World Dance Theatre showcases African narratives through movement, highlighting the richness of local storytelling. Cape Town-based choreographers Chesney Stanfield and Emile Petersen contribute brand-new works, underscoring the city’s role as a hub for innovation in dance.

For those craving a lighter take on the macabre, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors delivers gothic thrills with a comic twist. Adapted from Bram Stoker’s classic, the play transforms the dark tale of Count Dracula into a laugh-out-loud experience.
A Whirlwind of Characters

In this reimagining, Mina’s mysterious illness sparks chaos as Lucy, Jonathan, and the fearless vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing set out to stop Dracula. Six actors play more than a dozen roles, darting between characters with quick changes and sharp comedic timing. The result is a 90-minute rollercoaster of slapstick, witty dialogue, and just enough horror to keep audiences on edge.

The Tramp: Chaplin’s Story in Song and Style
Closing the trio of productions is The Tramp, a brand-new musical that reimagines the life of Charlie Chaplin through the lens of his most famous creation. Told in part through Chaplin’s iconic silent-film style, the show offers a heartfelt portrait of the comedy legend.
A Story of Fame and Exile
As Chaplin’s meteoric career rises and controversies mount, the Tramp becomes both confidant and critic. The musical explores their symbolic relationship, culminating in Chaplin’s exile and the deep loneliness of a star whose art was inseparable from his struggles. With its mix of popular music and theatrical invention, The Tramp breathes new life into a well-known story, making it accessible for both Chaplin enthusiasts and newcomers.
