UNFPA Chief Visits Ivory Coast, Applauds Progress While Urging More Action

Diene Keita highlights maternal health gains but calls for greater investment in reproductive rights

Diene Keita, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has begun an official visit to Ivory Coast. The trip includes high-level meetings with government officials and development partners to reinforce collaboration in advancing sexual and reproductive health. Keita described the country as a “beacon of hope” for the region, making it the first stop on her international mission as head of UNFPA.

“Ivory Coast is the first country I am visiting, because you are a beacon of hope for this region,” Keita said. She praised the socio-economic progress that Ivory Coast has achieved in recent years, noting that the strides made serve as an example for neighboring countries. Her remarks set the tone for a visit aimed at both recognition and renewed commitment.

Challenges Still Loom

Despite the progress, Keita acknowledged that Ivory Coast faces persistent challenges in sexual and reproductive health and rights. The country continues to struggle with high maternal mortality rates, limited access to contraceptives, and widespread adolescent pregnancies. These challenges not only affect health outcomes but also have lasting social and economic consequences.

Focus on Youth Empowerment

Keita stressed that access to reproductive health services is essential for young people. “It’s about ensuring that young girls and boys can access reproductive health services—because when they do, there will be fewer early and unintended pregnancies,” she explained. According to her, giving girls the opportunity to stay in school longer translates into better career opportunities, reduced poverty, and stronger communities.

Gains Through Partnership

UNFPA’s partnership with the Ivorian government has already delivered measurable improvements. Between 2012 and 2021, maternal mortality dropped significantly from 614 deaths per 100,000 live births to 385. Similarly, contraceptive use rose from 12.5 percent to 18 percent. These figures reflect the impact of long-term investments in healthcare infrastructure, training, and community-based outreach.

The Importance of Reproductive Rights

The UNFPA chief emphasized that reproductive rights are not just a matter of health but also of dignity and development. By giving individuals—particularly women the tools to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures, societies become more equitable and prosperous. Keita urged the government to continue prioritizing these issues to ensure sustainability of the progress achieved so far.

Addressing Maternal Mortality

Maternal health remains a central concern in Ivory Coast. Although the rate has improved, 385 deaths per 100,000 live births still reflects a serious challenge. UNFPA is working closely with local authorities to expand emergency obstetric care, train midwives, and ensure that rural populations have access to healthcare services. Expanding this reach is key to reducing preventable deaths.

Breaking the Cycle of Adolescent Pregnancy

Adolescent pregnancy continues to undermine the country’s development goals. Early motherhood often forces young girls out of school, limits their job opportunities, and perpetuates cycles of poverty. UNFPA’s ongoing programs focus on awareness, education, and access to modern contraceptives to help address this issue at its root.
