Fatmata Binta, a celebrated chef and culinary innovator, has been officially appointed as the Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
The announcement was made on World Food Day, marking a major milestone for the continent’s culinary heritage and the organization’s 80th anniversary celebrations.
Championing African Heritage Foods
Born in Sierra Leone and based in Ghana, Binta has spent years promoting underused African crops and traditional food systems. Through her work, she has elevated indigenous ingredients to global recognition, shining a spotlight on Africa’s rich culinary culture.
“This role means standing at the intersection of culture, food, and policy,” Binta said as she accepted the award. “I want to advocate for Africa’s forgotten foods and ensure rural communities are heard.”
A Vision for Rural Empowerment
Binta’s mission goes beyond the kitchen. She is committed to supporting rural women farmers across sub-Saharan Africa by creating access to resources and markets.
As the first African to win the prestigious Basque Culinary World Prize, Binta has become a symbol of how food can drive social and economic change.
Fulani Kitchen and Dine on a Mat
Binta is best known for her Dine on a Mat nomadic restaurant concept and the Fulani Kitchen Foundation. Both initiatives celebrate Fulani culinary traditions and provide sustainable support to small-scale female farmers.
