Ghanaian Top Officials, Including Defence Minister, Die in Helicopter Crash Near Obuasi
A devastating helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of four prominent government officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter, a Z9 model, was en route to Obuasi for a government programme focused on combating illegal mining when it crashed near Adansi Akrofuom on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the impact was severe, with the helicopter bursting into flames upon impact. The aircraft was carrying a total of eight people, including three crew members and five passengers, all believed to be top government officials.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the deaths in an official statement, sending shockwaves through the country’s leadership and military establishment. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
