Highlife Legend Daddy Lumba Dies at 60

A National Loss
Ghana is mourning the loss of legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away at age 60. He died in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Fans in Shock
Sources close to the family confirmed that the music icon was admitted days earlier. By midday, scores of fans and sympathisers had gathered outside his East Legon residence, stunned by the news. His passing marks the end of an era in Ghanaian music.

Family Pays Tribute
In an official statement issued by Baba Jamal & Associates on behalf of the family, they praised Daddy Lumba as more than a musician.
“Daddy Lumba was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives and left a deep imprint on Ghana’s soul,” the statement read.

A Life in Music
Born on September 29, 1964, Daddy Lumba began his musical journey at age 16 while attending Juaben Senior High School. There, he formed a group called the Lumba Brothers with friends and his then-girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese. Later, with her help, he relocated to Germany in search of opportunities.

Forming New Alliances

In Germany, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, who had already started a group called Talking Dreams. Nana introduced Lumba to highlife music, which became a turning point in his career. Together, they formed a new version of the Lumba Brothers.

First Album and Breakthrough
Although their first album was planned for 1986, it was delayed due to financial issues and finally released in 1989 with support from Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa. The album, Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu, marked the beginning of a prolific career.

A Prolific Career
Daddy Lumba released a total of 33 albums, including hits like Aben Wɔha, Awosuɔ, Obi Ate Me So Buɔ, Sika Asɛm, and Ebi Se Ɛyɛ Aduro. His unique blend of melodies, controversial lyrics, and powerful storytelling captivated fans across generations.

Recognition and Legacy
In 1999, he swept the Ghana Music Awards, winning Best Album, Artist of the Year, and Most Popular Song of the Year. Until 2002, he released a new hit album almost every year. Despite controversies, especially his switch between gospel and secular themes, Lumba remained one of the most beloved artists in Ghanaian music history.

Personal Life
Daddy Lumba was married with children. He is survived by his family and millions of fans who cherished his music and influence.
