Baci is using a custom-made pot measuring six meters wide and 1.3 meters deep, capable of holding over 22,000 liters of food. She plans to cook 250 bags of rice, approximately 5,278 kilograms, to feed thousands of people. The attempt is being closely monitored by officials and will be reviewed by Guinness World Records once completed.
Baci, who in 2023 earned international recognition after breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon, said her latest challenge is not just about setting another record but also about celebrating African cuisine. Jollof rice, a dish with deep cultural roots across West Africa, has become a unifying symbol of the region’s shared heritage.
The event, titled “The World Jollof Festival with Hilda Baci,” was livestreamed across major social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Over 20,000 people registered to attend, far exceeding initial expectations and prompting a change of venue from Muri Okunola Park to Eko Hotel and Suites to accommodate the large crowd.
The Nigerian government has expressed strong support for the event, with Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, praising Baci’s initiative as a testament to Nigerian talent and creativity. As Baci stirs the giant pot of jollof rice, she is not only attempting to break a record but also showcasing Nigerian cuisine and culture to the world. The event is a celebration of food, community, and national pride, highlighting the importance of jollof rice in Nigerian identity and culture.
